Love food? Want to help your community save money? From mums and babies groups to Women's Institute, brownie packs to resident's groups, cookery teachers to village hall groups we need you to help us show people how easy it is to save money by reducing food waste.
If you are involved with a community group, this training is for you. The York and North Yorkshire waste partnership want to help residents save money by reducing the amount of good food that gets thrown away each year. This can be useable fruit and vegetables, bread and cakes, meat and fish or even chocolate and crisps, all getting thrown away when they could have been eaten. Reducing food waste can help the average family save £50 a month whilst families with children can save up to £680 a year. We're looking for members of community groups to attend our training on Love Food Hate Waste, to find out more about the campaign, and ideas on how it can be delivered in your local community, and then go back to your group to promote the campaign. This could be by holding a stand promoting the campaign at a local show, teaching people how fruit can be used in making smoothies, juices or even fruit leather, or having a leftover dinner. The York and North Yorkshire waste partnership can supply resources, such as banners and flags, leaflets, recipe cards, posters and even items such as bag clips and spaghetti measurers to help you promote the campaign, along with support for suggestions for events. County Councillor Chris Metcalfe and chairman of the York and North Yorkshire waste partnership commented, "There are lots of community groups out there with the skills and knowledge to help us promote the Love Food Hate Waste campaign to residents in York and North Yorkshire. With the range of activities already taking place in our towns and villages, getting the message about food waste out there should be easy." There are two training sessions planned; Saturday 17th September 2011 9.30am to 1pm, Northdale Horticulture, Yafforth Road, Northallerton, DL7 0LQ. Saturday 22nd October 2011 9.30am to 1pm, Jennyfield Styan Community Centre, Grantley Drive, Harrogate, HG3 2XU. To book a place on one of the training sessions, email wastecampaigns@northyorks.gov.uk or contact waste and countryside services on 01609 532512. |
