Household waste recycling centres

North Yorkshire County Council operate 20 household waste recycling centres across the county, and the City of York Council provides 3 sites within the York boundary. These sites are situated so that most people are within a 20 minute drive of their nearest household waste recycling centre.

Compactors Household waste recycling centres have traditionally been known by names such as 'the tip', 'the dump' and civic amenity sites but, with the main aim now being recycling rather than simply disposing of rubbish, the name has changed. A wide range of materials are accepted at the centres, with most sites accepting over 20 materials for reuse, recycling, composting or disposal. More than 60% of waste collected at the sites is reused, recycled or composted.
